Part One
Artists make art. It's just that simple.
Part Two
Authors write about the art. Again, pretty basic.
Claims
Are there claims? Of course! Here's the fun part -- there is a collaborative element where everyone is working together, trying to get all of the works claimed in order to open all the works up to everyone.
Here's how it works.
When your cohort is up for claims (this year's artists who also want to write get to claim earlier than those who are only authors), you can claim up to three works in your first claim. Each work can be claimed up to three times before it will be temporarily off the grid. (If you are in Round Four due to a default in your last year of participation, you will only be allowed to claim one piece per round. You must finish the piece before you are able to make another claim, but can continue to claim pieces one at a time. As long as you do not default again in the current year, your status will be reinstated for the next year. If you default again, you will remain at the single claims per round level of claiming until you have a year of success without a default).
Once you finish all of the works for your claims, you can come back and again claim up to three more works (previous defaulters, see above), as long as they are still on the grid.
Here's the collaborative part.
If we reach a point where all of the art is claimed three times, all works will return to the board.
If that occurs, once you finish whatever claims you currently have, you can grab as many as you want! It becomes a creativity free for all!
When you make your claims, you can submit one, two, or three numbers at a time. (Those on default status can only submit one claim at a time.) Remember, though, before you can submit more claims, you need to finish all of the works.
When you make your claims, you will receive as many as are still available at the time you claim. This means, if you only want one item, please do not list more than one number! If all of your options have been claimed, you will be asked to resubmit for that round. (This should only really potentially happen during the first day. Subsequent claiming will be staggered based on when people finish their works.)
Examples:
You submit claims for art 4, 7, and 10. You also want to write for art 8 and 6. You need to finish your claims for all three pieces (4, 7, and 10) from the first claim before you can submit claims for 8 and 6. If 8 and 6 have already been claimed thrice, you will need to wait until the everything is opened in order to write for them.
'Finish' is a very loose term. You will see in the FAQs, what qualifies as a 'finished' item allows for a wide variety, including an unfinished tale option.
Once you claim something, even after you finish your initial work for it, you retain the ability to keep writing additional works for it. Why does this matter? Let's say we never get to a point of all of the art being claimed thrice, but you want to earn additional accomplishments. You retain all of the numbers you successfully claim and can write multiple works for them.
